Birth of Venus

Created from 1485-1486 by Italian painter Sandro Botticelli

The Birth of Venus is a painting created by Sandro Botticelli in the 1480s. It displays the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as a human surrounded by other mythological figures. To the right of Venus, a woman, who is most likely the Hora of Spring, holds up a cloak to cover Venus. To the left of Venus, Zephyr, the wind god, carries another young woman and blows wind at Venus. The painting conveyed the rebirth of civilization after the Middle Ages, the era before the Renaissance. This painting was commissioned by the Medici family, symbolized by the orange trees found on the right side of the painting. The painting was considered a masterpiece and an integral part of the Renaissance, and it is still a widely celebrated piece of artwork.
