Pavilion by the Lake
Created in the late 18th century

Pavilion by the Lake is an ink painting estimated to be made in the late 18th century. The specific artist of this painting is unknown due to a lack of documentation, so the artist is listed as Samoje, the style name of artists from the Joseon Dynasty. The painting depicts several landscapes of Korea, including various mountains, trees, and traditional buildings. This style of landscape painting was popular in Korea from the late 17th century to the early 19th century and was mainly influenced by the “Southern School” literati painting. There were also speculations that the piece was adapted from popular painting manuals imported from China during the Ming Dynasty, with one of the famous paintings being the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. The Pavilion by the Lake is currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and continues to showcase the landscape art style from the Joseon Dynasty.
