Yun Du Seo was a famous Korean painter and scholar from the Joseon dynasty who was well-known for his self-portraits and for studying Confucianism. He was born in 1668 and was able to contribute to the development of Korean Art through his artworks of self-portraits and yeongmohwa (animal and bird paintings). His self-portraits are considered to be his best work and are painted in a traditional Korean style, with an emphasis on realism. They are known for their attention to detail, as well as their meticulous brushstrokes, paying close attention to their facial features and emotions. In this particular self-portrait, Yun Du Seo can be seen with a horsehair skullcap and a long beard hanging down his face. His face takes up most of the paper and there is meticulous detail on his face, painting every wrinkle and facial hair.
